If you love the outdoors and love to fish, then living in Polk County is a natural choice. We are literally surrounded by some of the world’s best freshwater fishing and there are over 544 lakes to choose from! On a rare day off, I had the pleasure of spending the day fishing on beautiful Lake Kissimmee and Lake Hatchineha, both part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. We started the day by launching the boat at the Lake Kissimmee State Park, a 5,930 acre Florida State Park which is situated on the western shore of 34,948 acre Lake Kissimmee. This lake system is very health and is widely known for great bass fishing and impressive numbers of speckled perch which was to be our targeted species. While on the water we made a quick trip to Camp Mack for fuel and food. Camp Mack is a 100 year old fish camp offering live bait, fuel, casual outdoor dining, RV campsites, cabins and more. If you’re fishing the area, a trip to Camp Mack is worthwhile. We spent the rest of our day catching a variety of quality fish and brought home some nice specks (aka speckled perch or crappie) for dinner. All in all, it was an ideal day of Florida fishing. While the great fishing impressed me, it was the miles of untouched shorelines and old-Florida vegetation that made me appreciate this very special place and how lucky I am to call Polk County my home.
